Training
Our staff are trained and work within the guidelines of positive practices based upon the tenets of the Institute of Applied Behavioural Analysis.
As opposed to traditional training methods, where the unit of progression is time and trainer centered, our training concentrates on the unit of progression being the mastery of specific knowledge, skills and is participant centered. Therefore, this becomes a competency based method of training and two key terms are used in this type of training:
SKILL:
a task(s) performed to a specific level of proficiency.
COMPETENCY:
a skill executed to a specific standard under specific conditions.
A competent staff member is one who is able to perform a skill to a more than satisfactory standard. We therefore expect each and every one of our staff team to attain and master the skills they will require and to perform them under certain conditions to match our exacting standards.
Following successful completion of their induction programme each staff member through their monthly supervisions and in conjunction with their manager will develop and plan their individual professional development with key targets.
This takes into account the different needs and aspirations of the staff as we believe all our staff should be given opportunities to develop the skills they require in order to carry out their roles competently and confidently.
Examples of some of the training our staff undertake are:
- Comprehensive Functional Assessment
- Person-Centred Positive Behavioural Support
- Emergency Management and Reactive
- Strategies within a Non-aversive Framework

To enable Integrated Support to provide a broad range of training, our staff have internal trainers who have progressed to become instructors. This is based upon national and international methods of providing positive support for people who are challenged by a learning disability and who can challenge services and supported by external resources from positive behaviour consultants throughout the country who train and empower our staff.
Support for people who are challenged with a learning disability is a specialist field in which new ideas and practices are constantly arising.
Therefore we believe that it is vital our staff are given the means of undertaking their role in a positive manner.
We are committed to supporting the ongoing learning, training and development of our staff.
We have a happy, well-trained team and it is not surprising that their pride and confidence in their work is reflected in the friendly atmosphere at all our homes.
